Aizawl: Mizoram on Wednesday launched the MizoTaxi mobile application, a home-grown cab aggregation platform aimed at modernising public transport and offering commuters govt-approved fares amid opposition from different corners.Transport minister Vanlalhlana launched the app at a function at the directorate conference Hall of the Transport Department, calling it “a significant milestone” for Mizoram’s public transport. He said that while Ola, Uber and Rapido operate across India, “it was a matter of pride” that Mizoram now has its own platform built by Mizo entrepreneurs for the state.Vanlalhlana said MizoTaxi will allow passengers to hire taxis at fares approved by the state transport authority (STA), unlike commercial aggregators that determine fares based on profit considerations. He said taxi drivers are “integral members” of the transport ecosystem and “serve as ambassadors of the state,” often being visitors’ first point of contact at Lengpui Airport or Sairang railway station. He said the app would support online booking and digital payment, reduce disputes over charges and help drivers secure more passengers.Transport Director and STA Secretary R. Lalrammawia said the app is not meant to exploit operators. MizoTaxi will deduct 6% per fare, with a minimum of Rs 5 and maximum of Rs 10 per trip, to cover operations and maintenance. The platform covers four-wheel taxis, two-wheel taxis and auto-rickshaws. Operators paid a one-time Rs 500 registration fee. Officials said 974 cabbies, including 683 two-wheeler drivers, were approved before the July 1 rollout. The STA said new permits may be issued if registrations remain insufficient.
