Aizawl: Central committee of the Young Mizo Association, the largest civil society organisation in Mizoram, decided to urge the election authorities to re-examine constituencies showing unusually high increases in the number of electors in the draft electoral roll prepared under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls2026.The organisation also plans to take up the matter directly with the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Delhi.Addressing media persons at the Central YMA Committee Room on Tuesday, the association’s leaders said they conducted a detailed study of the SIR 2026 Draft Electoral Roll and identified what they believe to be serious anomalies in certain constituencies, especially those located along the international border with Bangladesh in the south-western part of the state.According to the Central YMA, a comparison between the number of electors in the last Special Intensive Revision conducted in 2005, the population growth recorded since then and the Enumeration Forms submitted during the digitisation process indicates figures that appear to be inconsistent and difficult to reconcile in some Assembly constituencies. The association also expressed concern over what it described as possible irregularities in the mapping process carried out during the revision exercise. The organisation said it would formally request the election officials to conduct a thorough review of these issues.Central YMA president R. Lalngheta said the draft roll reflected an unusually sharp increase in the number of electors in several constituencies located along Mizoram’s western border, which the organisation considered a matter of concern.Lalngheta said the Central YMA would urge the authorities to re-verify the electoral data in these constituencies and would also pursue the matter with the central poll panel by meeting the concerned officials personally in Delhi. He further alleged that some officials involved in the SIR exercise in constituencies with significant increases in voter numbers did not discharge their responsibilities satisfactorily. The Central YMA also appealed to the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) to ensure that only bona fide residents are included in the electoral roll during the period for filing claims and objections as well as during the hearing process. It urged YMA branches and other non-governmental organisations to actively participate in the hearings to help ensure the integrity of the electoral rolls. The organisation also appealed to all political parties to approach the exercise responsibly and without partisan considerations.
