Gorakhpur: A man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping a 35-year-old mentally ill woman while she was resting outside a temple in Gorakhpur’s Pipraich area. The incident, which occurred on July 24, was captured on a CCTV camera installed on the temple premises, leading to the accused’s arrest.According to police, the woman, who is known to wander around the locality and often sleeps near the temple, was resting on a platform around 11.40 pm when the accused, identified as Deepak Gupta, 55, approached her. CCTV footage reportedly shows the man sexually assaulting the woman. He fled the spot after she resisted.The crime came to light the following day when locals noticed the woman’s condition and reviewed the CCTV footage. Police were informed, and a case was registered on the complaint of the temple priest.SP North Gyanendra Kumar said the accused was traced and arrested with the help of CCTV footage.Pipraich SHO Vivek Trivedi said the survivor has undergone a medical examination and her statement has been recorded.
