Shillong: Meghalaya is preparing for the impact of El Nino, the global climate phenomenon, which is predicted to hit the state in less than a couple of months.“The Nov–March period will be critical. El Nino is a reality, but its impacts are difficult to predict. Our approach must therefore be based on preparedness and adaptation, backed by clear plans and SOPs for different scenarios,” CM Conrad K Sangma has said.The CM chaired a meeting of the Meghalaya State Council on Climate Change on Friday on the preparedness for El Nino and the potential climate-related challenges ahead. “While the pre-monsoon season was near normal, climate risk and vulnerability mapping is being undertaken across districts, with a focus on strengthening our preparedness and resilience,” he said.The meeting discussed strengthening interdepartmental convergence, proposing block-level climate action teams, rejuvenating springs and critical water sources, and expanding plantation initiatives, especially in vulnerable catchment areas.
