Man shoots nephew dead over land dispute

Zira: A land division dispute escalated into a violent confrontation in Mansoorwal Kalan village under the Zira constituency of the Ferozepur district when a man shot his nephew dead after the latter tried to stop him from constructing a water tank in the fields.Gurvinder Singh (26) died at the spot.After the incident, the accused Jaswinder Singh and his wife fled the scene. Jaswant Singh, another paternal uncle of the deceased, said they were three brothers, and a dispute regarding land division had been ongoing for some time.Jaswant stated his brother Jaswinder was constructing a water tank in the fields. When Gurvinder tried to stop it, Jaswinder, in a fit of rage, fired four shots from his licensed .32 bore pistol, he said.Jaswant said three bullets struck Gurvinder, who died on the spot. Gurvinder was living with his mother in the village while his sister and father lived abroad, he added.Upon receiving information about the incident, Zira deputy superintendent of police Jaspal Singh Dhillon arrived at the scene with a team. The DSP said the police were conducting a thorough investigation into the matter, and a forensic team is gathering evidence from the site.He assured the bereaved family that the accused would soon be apprehended and legal action taken. Gurvinder’s body was shifted to the Zira Civil Hospital for the postmortem.
