Kolkata: A 61-year-old man, Judhajit Ghosh alias Yudhajit, has been arrested from Deshapriya Park on Tuesday evening for allegedly pretending to be an Enforcement Directorate official and trying to extort money from a former Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor.The accused is from Kailash Ghosh Road in Haridevpur and was living at Regent Park Govt Colony. Police said the complainant, Monalisa Banerjee, a former councillor of KMC ward 49 and a resident of APC Road, had gone to meet Ghosh at a cafe on Motilal Nehru Road. During the meeting, Ghosh allegedly claimed that he was linked to the ED and said he could settle ED cases. Banerjee became suspicious because she had no pending case with the agency. Around 6.55 pm, when Ghosh allegedly demanded money, she called Rabindra Sarobar police station for help.A police team reached the cafe near Deshapriya Park and detained Ghosh. Police said he had allegedly created a fake money laundering complaint against Banerjee and used it to threaten her. He allegedly demanded a large amount of money to clear her name.Banerjee later filed a complaint against Ghosh and other unknown persons suspected to be involved. Rabindra Sarobar police registered an FIR, and Ghosh was arrested later that night. He has been booked under sections of the BNS related to criminal conspiracy, impersonating a public servant and extortion.
