Chandigarh: A city resident allegedly lost Rs 1.9 lakh after being tricked into installing a malicious mobile application on the pretext of updating his LPG connection.Police registered a case against the unknown accused on the complaint of the victim. Sector 48 resident Harpreet Singh said that he received a call from an unknown number on July 23. The caller claimed that his gas connection required an update and allegedly pressured him to continue the conversation.During the call, another mobile number was used to send an APK file through WhatsApp. The caller instructed the complainant to open the file, install the application, follow instructions given on the screen, and change certain phone settings.The complainant alleged that he was also asked to share his credit card details through WhatsApp for a payment-related process. At around 9:43am, he received a bank alert stating that Rs 1,95,115 had been spent through a transaction at “Zepto Now.”The victim immediately blocked all cards linked to his bank account. He stated that three more attempts were made to use the same credit card, but the transactions failed because the card had already been blocked. The complainant has submitted screenshots of the transaction alerts and filed a complaint at the cyber police station in Sector 17. After verifying the facts, police registered a case against unknown persons.
