Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad crime branch on Friday arrested a man from Narol area of the city with two illegal firearms and a live cartridge during a special drive launched ahead of the rath yatra.The accused was identified as Mohammad Rafiq alias Kaniya Altafir Mansuri, a resident of Alif Nagar on Vatva Canal Road.According to the crime branch officials, the special operations group (SOG) teams have intensified surveillance, patrolling and combing operations across the city to identify people possessing illegal firearms and those suspected of planning offences during the yatra.Police said they received information that a man was carrying an illegal firearm in Narol area. Acting on the tip-off, a crime branch team laid a watch near Narayan Petrol Pump and intercepted the suspect.During the search, officers recovered a country-made pistol, a firearm, one live cartridge and a mobile phone. The total value of the seized items was estimated at Rs 40,200.As the accused failed to produce any valid licence or permit to carry firearms, the police registered an FIR against him under relevant provisions of the Arms Act and the Gujarat Police Act.
