Man held in Mizoram teenager’s murder case escapes from custody

Aizawl: A 20-year-old man arrested in connection with the death of a 15-year-old girl in Mizoram’s Lunglei district escaped from police custody around midnight on Monday, police said Tuesday.The suspect, Denghmingthanga of Mualthuam North village, was being held in the case linked to the death of H Lalramdinpuii. A search was launched after the escape was noticed, but he had not been traced by the time this report was filed.Denghmingthanga and another villager, Lalneihkima, 34, were arrested on Aug 20 after an SIT of Lunglei police examined digital and forensic evidence and questioned several people. Police said both men had been interrogated multiple times before being taken into custody and later remanded to judicial custody.Police have not said how Denghmingthanga managed to flee or whether there was a security lapse. CCTV footage from the police station is expected to be reviewed to reconstruct events and determine responsibility. Senior officers, including the district superintendent of police, reviewed the incident Tuesday morning, but officials declined to share details, citing an ongoing assessment.Lalramdinpuii left home at around 8.30 pm on Aug 3 and was reported missing. After searches by family and village volunteers, her body was found on Aug 5 in a school compound in Mualthuam North.
