Surat police arrest Sagar Sonavane alias Manya Dukkar in Udhana murder of BJP worker Jay Dalal
Surat: The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) arrested a wanted accused allegedly linked to the murder of 21-year-old BJP youth wing functionary Jay Dalal, from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district in Maharashtra.Police also recovered a country-made pistol and five live cartridges from another accused in the case.Additional commissioner of police (crime) Dr Karanraj Vaghela said a team led by DCP Bhavesh Rojiya received information that Sagar Sonawane alias Maniyo Dukkar (26), one of the main accused in the murder, was hiding in Maharashtra. He was arrested near a temple in the Kagjipura village.Dalal was attacked on the night of May 16 and died in hospital two days later while undergoing treatment. With Sonawane’s arrest, 13 people have so far been arrested in connection with the murder case.“Sonawane had been changing locations across states over the past four months since Dalal’s murder in May,” Vaghela said.According to police, Dalal was attacked with a sharp weapon near a scrap shop on Udhna Road No. 6 and later succumbed to his injuries. The case was registered at Udhna police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Gujarat Police Act.During interrogation, Sonawane allegedly told police that Jayesh alias Barku Yuvraj Wagh had given him a loaded Indian-made pistol around six to seven months ago. Acting on the information, Crime Branch officials recovered the pistol and five live cartridges from another accused, Pritesh Sonawane. A separate case was registered under the Arms Act, police said.Police said Sonawane is a habitual offender and had earlier been booked twice under provisions of the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime (GCTOC) Act. He has also been arrested in more than 21 cases, including murder, attempt to murder, robbery, extortion and Arms Act offences.While there had been claims that Dalal was killed over a prohibition-related issue, police said their investigation indicated that the murder stemmed from a financial dispute between Dalal and the accused.
