Weavers seek to mend market threads
Textile weavers to introduce new operational norms

Surat: The weaving industry in the city moved to tighten its trade practices at Weavers Mahamanthan 2026 on Wednesday, as rising yarn prices, delayed payments and fraud cases strained the city’s textile market.Weaving unit owners met at Weavers Mahamanthan 2026 to discuss issues affecting airjet, waterjet, rapier jacquard and powerloom units. Industry leaders and weavers agreed on steps to protect weavers’ interests.Participants decided that weavers would avoid stocking yarn to help keep prices under control. As yarn rates rise, the association will make representations to the govt seeking intervention. To reduce payment risks between weavers and textile traders, the meeting resolved that goods would be supplied on a maximum credit period of 30 days. Interest will be charged on payments made after 30 days. With fraud cases rising in the market, the group agreed to develop an app to centralise broker and agency details. Brokers and agencies will have to submit key information, allowing weavers to verify parties before doing business and lowering the risk of supplies being sent to fraudulent buyers. The meeting also discussed delivery charges. Yarn makers and dealers collect per-kg delivery fees, while weavers had been offering one free delivery for finished fabric. Weavers will now charge per metre for fabric delivery.Weaving industry leaders also decided to focus on creating new fabric varieties instead of competing on prices.
