Mumbai: The entire works of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule will be translated into seven languages, state culture minister Ashish Shelar announced on the occasion of Phule’s bicentennial celebrations. These include Hindi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Telugu, Bengali and Gor Banjara.The cultural affairs department of the Maharashtra govt operates Sahitya Akademis for Hindi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Telugu, Bengali and Gor Banjara. A one-day translation workshop was organised at the PL Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy in Prabhadevi on Thursday to promote literary exchange through these Sahitya Akademis.The primary objective of the workshop was to encourage the translation of outstanding Marathi literary works into various languages, as well as the translation of notable works from other languages into Marathi.Speaking on the occasion, Shelar said that quality literature in Marathi should reach readers in other languages, while outstanding literature from other languages should also be made available in Marathi.Shelar announced that the complete works of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule will be translated into all seven languages through the respective Sahitya Akademis.Under the project, the 861-page volume ‘Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Samagra Vangmay’, published in 2012 by the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Charitra Sadhan Prakashan Samiti, will be translated into the seven languages.Renowned writer Manjiri Dhamankar, Dr Shitala Prasad Dubey, Ajit Manyal, Alok Singh, Prashant Verma, Akademi secretary Sachin Nimbalkar, along with translators and scholars working in other languages, participated in the workshop.
