Kazakh national escapes from Mapusa detention centre

TNNMapusa: A Kazakh national Alexander Arkhipov, who was awaiting deportation, escaped from Mapusa detention centre at 8.45pm on Monday.Police said Arkhipov scaled the high compound wall and flee the premises. A police officer said the incident occurred shortly after the inmates were let out of their cells for daily routine.Seizing the opportunity, Arkhipov walked towards the washbasin area located at the rear side of the centre and before the guards could react, the foreign national jumped over the adjacent security wall and disappeared.Though the detention centre staff chased him, he managed to outrun them. A search was immediately launched by the security personnel and police. They combed through the town. However, the Kazakh national remains at large.Police said Arkhipov was arrested by Mandrem police for statutory violations and transferred to the Mapusa detention facility to facilitate his repatriation.Mapusa police have registered a case and are investigating the security breach.
