July records third wettest spell, but rain likely to be moderate in coming days
Sanguem and Valpoi centres recorded very heavy rainfall of 133.5mm and 122.1mm on Friday

Panaji: With 47 days of the monsoon and nearly three weeks of peak season month passing by, the seasonal total is yet to cross the average of July rainfall, though the last 24 hours were one of the wettest of this season so far.On Friday morning, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji, recorded the third highest 24-hour daily average rainfall of 41.1mm.The highest during this month so far was 64.8mm recorded on the morning of July 1, followed by 49.7mm on July 3.This followed a dry spell of four consecutive days that nearly scorched the crops and caused much discomfort.The monsoon revival due to a trough running from southwest Bay of Bengal to north Lakshadweep area across north Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka and north Kerala produced very heavy to heavy rainfall till Friday morning after just 4.4mm was recorded on Thursday morning.On Friday, the seasonal total touched 956.2mm as compared to the normal value of 1501.8mm. Average rainfall of July is 995mm.The deficit of 38℅ after four dry days from July 12 to 15 has been reduced to 36.3℅ on Friday.During the last 24 hours till Friday morning, Sanguem and Valpoi centres recorded very heavy rainfall of 133.5mm and 122.1mm. Quepem and Sanquelim received heavy rainfall of 80.6mm and 69.6mm till Friday morning.Among other centres, Ponda recorded 45.8mm, Dharbandora 26.2mm , Canacona 23.2mm, Pernem 21.2mm, Old Goa 15.3mm and other centres on a lesser scale.Though cloudy skies and rainfall brought down maximum temperature in the city to 31.2 degrees celsius, it was still 1.9 degrees above normal from previous days. With this, the morning hours continued to be warm.The minimum temperature on Friday was 27.4 degrees celsius, a discomfiting 3.2 degrees above normal.IMD has forecast only moderate rainfall for the next few days.
