Man lynched in Nuvem over theft suspicion, three arrested

Panaji: An unidentified man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people in Nuvem, Salcete, on Thursday evening after being suspected of stealing a two-wheeler. Maina-Curtorim police registered a murder case and arrested three accused. They have registered the first information report (FIR) against four persons and unidentified individuals.Maina-Curtorim police arrested Greyson Fernandes, Domnic Fernandes and Francis Dias.Police said that as per preliminary investigation, the deceased had committed theft of a two-wheeler from Colva.The owner had parked his two-wheeler and gone for a football match and when he returned, he realised that his bike was missing. When he checked the CCTV footage, he saw one person committing theft of his two-wheeler. Police said that later in the evening he saw the person who was seen in CCTV footage and confronted him.SP South Goa Tikam Singh Verma said that the murder case was registered following a complaint regarding an unlawful assault resulting in the death of an unidentified male individual.Singh said on the evening of Thursday at Nuvem, an unlawful assembly of individuals intercepted and assaulted a 30-year-old unidentified male person with kicks and fist blows on suspicion of involvement in the theft of a two-wheeler from Colva earlier that evening.“The injured individual was subsequently shifted to the casualty department of South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao, where attending doctors declared him brought dead,” Singh said. “Maina-Curtorim police have arrested three accused. The stolen two-wheeler has been secured.”The SP said that multiple police teams have been mobilised to identify, verify the roles of, and apprehend others involved in the unlawful gathering and assault.
