Judge recuses from hearing Mahanta bail plea in Zubeen case

Guwahati: Justice Mitali Thakuria of Gauhati high court will hear the bail plea of Zubeen Garg death case accused Shyamkanu Mahanta on May 22, said special public prosecutor (SPP) Z Kamar on Friday.Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia on Friday recused himself from the bail plea hearing of Mahanta and directed the registry to list it before an appropriate bench.Mahanta moved the high court after the fast track court, which was set up for speedy trial of the Zubeen Garg death case, denied bail to him on Apr 30, citing “risk of fleeing”, the SPP said. Mahanta had applied for bail before the fast track court on Apr 10.Mahanta, the organiser of the fourth edition of the North East India Festival in Singapore, is one of the seven accused in the Zubeen Garg death case and has been lodged in jail since Sept last year. Zubeen died on Sept 19 last year while swimming in the sea in Singapore. He had gone to the festival on Sept 17 and was supposed to perform at the festival on Sept 20.
