Gandhinagar: The Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub (SAMARTH) will soon be launched at IIT Gandhinagar to provide engineering students with training and hands-on exposure in semiconductor technology, according to a statement issued on Friday. The Union govt has allocated Rs 190 crore for the project.“IIT Gandhinagar has already initiated the process of procuring equipment and appointing consultants for construction and operational requirements,” the statement said.IIT Gandhinagar is also preparing to sign MoUs with engineering colleges across Gujarat to offer affordable learning opportunities to students. SAMARTH will conduct specialised short-term certificate programmes as well. Over the next five years, it aims to train 5,600 undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students. Additionally, 1,500 technicians from vocational and technical streams and 1,000 participants enrolled in certificate courses are expected to receive training.Professional development and upskilling programmes will also train 230 faculty members and 230 industry professionals. Besides this, more than 2,700 students will be introduced to the sector through summer schools and one-day exposure programmes. Overall, the initiative is expected to provide advanced training to a workforce of more than 10,000 people.The centre will be equipped with facilities for training in nanofabrication and CMOS processes. It will house a facility for inspection, testing and quality assessment of electronic tools. In addition, semiconductor process and device design laboratories, device modelling facilities, and IC design and prototyping labs will be established, the statement said.
