Commissioned at Goa on May 9, the 51-metre-long vessel is equipped with advanced navigation, communication and surveillance systems designed for sustained patrols and rapid-response missions in challenging maritime conditions.Officials said the deployment of ICGS Achal comes at a time when maritime security in the Arabian Sea and along India’s western seaboard remains a key strategic priority. The vessel will strengthen round-the-clock surveillance, improve emergency response times, and enhance monitoring of coastal and offshore activities. The basing of the FPV at Vadinar is significant given the region’s proximity to critical shipping lanes, offshore installations and international maritime routes. Coast Guard officials said the vessel will play an important role in anti-smuggling operations, search-and-rescue missions, fisheries protection and safeguarding India’s maritime interests. The induction also reflects the Centre’s continued emphasis on coastal security infrastructure following the expansion of surveillance networks and operational assets along the Gujarat coast. With ICGS Achal joining the fleet, the Coast Guard’s operational footprint in the North-West maritime sector is expected to deepen, providing an added layer of security for fishermen, commercial shipping and strategic assets while reinforcing India’s maritime domain awareness architecture.
