HC seeks action on alleged police abuse of 75-yr-old retired cop

Hyderabad: Telangana high court on Thursday voiced shock over disturbing allegations that Madhura Nagar police humiliated a 75‑year‑old retired sub‑inspector, Mohammed Osman, dragging him out of his home in Yousufguda and subjecting him to abuse.Justice T Madhavi Devi asked the police to respond to the allegations, directing notices to Madhura Nagar police, Hyderabad police commissioner, and principal secretary, home department, and asking why Osman should not be compensated for the alleged misconduct.Osman said police barged into his residence on May 18 and forced him out. He further alleged that police threatened him at gunpoint and demanded Rs 1 lakh, warning they would register a false case against him.“I was subjected to mental agony, physical torture and humiliation in front of the public,” he told the court, urging strict disciplinary action against the officers concerned. “I served the department for over three decades,” Osman said.Osman’s counsel told the court that the cops did not give any reason for taking him away. “There are no cases against him,” he said.The counsel alleged that the officers were taking Osman to the police station but abandoned him midway when he collapsed. Passersby shifted him to a nearby private hospital, where he underwent treatment costing Rs 25,000.
