Guwahati: A brief spell of rain on Wednesday left parts of the city waterlogged, disrupting normal life and triggering traffic congestion despite just 4 mm of rainfall.Water accumulated on major roads and in residential pockets, slowing vehicular movement and leaving commuters stuck in long queues. Pedestrians also struggled as several stretches remained submerged for hours after the rain stopped.Noonmati and Maligaon were among the worst-hit areas. “The drainage channels are not equipped to carry rainwater, which is why our area gets flooded during heavy rainfall. Water enters our homes and takes several hours to drain away, causing significant inconvenience and damage. This has become a serious problem for residents. We request the authorities to rectify the drainage system and take immediate steps to prevent flooding in the future,” said Suman Rajbangshi, a Noonmati resident. In Maligaon, waterlogging led to major congestion and disrupted vehicle movement. Videos circulating on social media showed commuters falling off two-wheelers while navigating a waterlogged stretch near Jalukbari Police Station. City buses also got stranded, worsening the gridlock and bringing traffic to a standstill.“For pedestrians, it’s frightening to use footpaths during flooding because you can’t tell which stretches are safe and which are open or damaged. It feels like an accident waiting to happen,” said Anamika Mandal, a resident of Pandu.
