Gujarat schools yet to hire teachers on contract

Ahmedabad: Even a month after the start of the academic year, the process to recruit gyan sahayaks on contract for Classes IX to XII has not begun in the state’s schools, raising serious concerns about academic disruption. The commissioner of schools has not yet begun collecting data on the number of vacant teaching positions across districts, sources said.Usually, before the academic year begins, the education department gathers information about the vacancies across schools. Based on these figures, recruitment notifications are issued to fill vacancies, particularly in schools facing a shortage of permanent teachers.Sources indicate that without first obtaining vacancy details, the department cannot proceed with issuing recruitment advertisements for gyan sahayaks. Even if the process begins within the next few days, it is expected to take over a month to complete, further delaying the availability of teachers in classrooms. This delay could affect students, especially those in crucial secondary and higher secondary grades. With exams approaching, many students will appear for their first tests without adequate teaching support.
