Gurgaon: GMDA has decided to revisit its plan for constructing a rail overbridge at the Garhi railway crossing, now proposing a four-lane structure instead of two. The decision was taken in view of the increasing traffic volume along the Dwarka Expressway.Officials said consent has been obtained from the railways for a 50:50 cost-sharing arrangement, and a detailed project report will be prepared based on the revised design.
The proposed overbridge is expected to provide an alternative route for commuters travelling between the Dwarka Expressway and nearby sectors
The overbridge, first proposed in 2024, was planned as a two-lane structure at an estimated cost of around Rs 55 crore. The proposed overbridge is expected to provide an alternative route for commuters travelling between the Dwarka Expressway and nearby sectors, reducing pressure on the existing two-lane Basai rail overbridge, which connects Basai to Dhankot and remains congested during peak hours.Officials said the project is expected to improve connectivity for several residential societies such as BPTP Township, Imperial Esfera, ILD Greens, Apex Our Homes and Signature Global, along with other upcoming projects. Key institutional and industrial areas, including schools, hospitals and establishments in sectors 37C, 37D, 9B and Basai village, are also expected to see improved connectivity.“We have asked the consultant to submit a feasibility report. Based on that, the detailed design and cost estimates will be finalised. The railways have agreed to share 50% of the cost. Land availability is largely not an issue, but the alignment involves some curvature, so final length and technical details will be clear after the feasibility study,” a GMDA official said.In the state budget presented in March, the Haryana govt earmarked Rs 302 crore for five grade separators in the city, including the proposed Garhi overbridge, to strengthen urban mobility infrastructure. For now, however, commuters continue to grapple with poor road conditions at the existing railway crossing. The approach road, originally constructed by PWD, is riddled with deep potholes, broken concrete slabs and stagnant wastewater from nearby households, making daily travel both slow and hazardous.Residents said the stretch has been neglected as no agency is ready to repair it. “During the rains, it turns into a waterlogged mess, and traffic movement becomes chaotic. Both the PWD and MCG are passing the buck on each other, but there has been no resolution,” said the RWA president of BPTP Park Serene in Sector 37D, Sandeep Sharma.“Dwarka Expressway is just a five-minute drive away from our society. However, it sometimes takes 20 minutes to pass the railway crossing. GMDA should take up the construction of the overbridge on priority,” Sharma added.
