Bengaluru: A fake parcel delivery message turned into a cyber harassment nightmare for an 18-year-old girl, after an unidentified man allegedly sent her an explicit image and abusive voice messages on WhatsApp when she refused to engage with him.According to the complaint filed by Divya (name changed), a resident of Gavipuram in south Bengaluru, she noticed the obscene messages around 11.10am on July 14 while she was at Basavanagudi police station bus stop. She alleged that an unknown person, using the number 8197582852, first texted her “Hi” and attempted a video call. When she did not respond, he sent a voice message claiming that a parcel addressed to her had reached his office and that she needed to verify it through video call.Suspicious, Divya asked him to send a photograph of the parcel instead. The caller claimed there were too many items to photograph and continued making video calls. Since she had not ordered anything online, she refused to answer and warned him through a voice message not to call again. The man then allegedly sent her an explicit image of a man’s private parts, followed by abusive voice messages. Divya replied that she would approach police, after which he deleted the explicit image from the chat. She immediately approached Basavanagudi police and lodged a complaint. A case has been registered under BNS Sections 75 (sexual harassment), 78 (stalking), and 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act. Police are making efforts to trace the accused.
