Two Navi Mumbai residents undergo surgery after fish bones get lodged in neck

Navi Mumbai: Two Navi Mumbai residents landed in hospital after tiny fish bones got lodged deep in their throats, forcing doctors to perform surgery to remove them.A 53-year-old woman from Khopoli and a 60-year-old teacher from Panvel initially tried home remedies such as swallowing bananas and sticky rice to dislodge the bones, but neither worked. Instead, the bones migrated deeper into the neck, turning a common dining mishap into a potentially life-threatening emergency.ENT and endoscopic surgeon Dr Rajendra Waghela, who operated on both the patients at Medicover Hospitals, Kharghar, said, “If the bone gets lodged deep in the throat, it can cause infection, breathing difficulty and become life-threatening.”The woman, a homemaker, developed severe throat pain while eating dinner. Doctors opted for neck exploration under general anaesthesia and used ultrasound during the operation to pinpoint and remove the bone. The Panvel teacher sought treatment after a fish bone became stuck while he was eating lunch. A CT scan confirmed the foreign body, but surgeons again had to rely on intraoperative ultrasound because the thin bone was not visible during surgery. Doctors advised people to avoid talking, laughing or getting distracted while eating, particularly while consuming fish.
