Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) inspector Sunil Kumar and constable Deepak have been awarded Gallantry Medals for their role in the encounter that killed dreaded western Uttar Pradesh gangster Anil Dujana in Meerut’s Jani area on May 4, 2023.Dujana, who was involved in 66 criminal cases including murder, robbery, kidnapping and dacoity, was killed in a gunfight with an STF team near Bhola Ki Jhaal on Gang Nahar.The operation was conducted by an STF team led by SP Brijesh Singh. According to police, Dujana arrived at the spot in a Scorpio SUV around 3 pm. On spotting the STF team, he allegedly attempted to flee by turning the vehicle towards the embankment of the Kanwar route and driving towards Satwai.After travelling around 200 metres, the SUV crashed into an electricity pole. Dujana then allegedly stepped out carrying a pistol in each hand and opened fire at the STF personnel.The STF team, with inspector Sunil Kumar and head constable Deepak, retaliated. According to officials, Dujana fired around 14-15 rounds, while the STF team fired six rounds. Dujana sustained two bullet injuries and collapsed. He was rushed to CHC Panchli, where doctors declared him dead.Police subsequently recovered one .30-bore China Star pistol, two .32-bore country-made pistols, one .315-bore country-made firearm and 69 cartridges from the spot.
