Jaipur: A fresh complaint of alleged ragging, this one claiming sexual humiliation and threats, has been reported from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Medical College in Churu Monday, prompting National Medical Commission (NMC) to demand an urgent action-taken report from the institution. The commission has reached out to the college’s principal and dean to emphasise the serious nature of the claims and demand that they be taken seriously.Although the latest complaint marks the 13th incident of alleged ragging reported from medical colleges across Rajasthan since early Oct, only two of the institutions concerned have so far initiated action against those found involved. They include Barmer Govt Medical College, where 79 students faced disciplinary actions that included permanent or temporary expulsions from the hostel and exclusion from academic activities for varying periods.

Similarly, administrators at Dr SN Medical College in Jodhpur suspended 19 students — including a junior resident — after an in-house anti-ragging panel found them guilty of engaging in objectionable behaviour towards juniors. The complainant in this case reported corporal punishments, forcible haircuts and threats. “We were told we’d be boycotted from college events if we spoke up against the ragging,” the complainant had said.Complainants in almost all the cases reported so far have called for enforcement of UGC Regulations on Curbing Ragging, together with NMC’s anti-ragging guidelines. Besides demanding urgent and fair investigations into the allegations, complainants also requested counselling support and protection from potential retaliation. In response, NMC had demanded that the institutions concerned provide comprehensive details of investigations conducted and actions taken, together with the safeguarding of complainants from retaliatory intimidation. The commission also sought clarification from individual medical colleges on the operational status of their respective anti-ragging committees.Meanwhile, the nationwide medical practitioners’ body, United Doctors Front, has responded to the escalating number of ragging allegations from different medical colleges. “We have written to the chief minister and director general of police demanding their immediate intervention in this matter,” said the organisation’s secretary Lakshya Mittal.
