Fit checks, feelings and full-blown rants: The many moods of GRWM

It began as a makeup tutorial: a little foundation, a swipe of blush, an outfit pick and a quick product review. Now, it has become something far more personal. For Gen Z, a Get Ready With Me (GRWM) video is often less about getting ready and more about having someone to talk to while doing it.Breakups, anxiety, career confusion, first dates, family expectations and identity struggles are all part of the conversation. The mundane act of getting dressed becomes a chance to tell a story, share an opinion or simply feel seen. The mirror is the stage, and the audience is the friend on the other side. The many avatars of GRWMThe format has outgrown the vanity table. Here’s what Gen Z is filming:

  • Chatty GRWM: Storytimes about breakups, friendship fallouts, dating disasters and everyday anxieties.
  • Protest GRWM: Placards, comfortable shoes, a safety checklist and a clear reason for showing up. It has entered India’s student protest culture, and it has split creators on whether it amplifies the cause or trivialises it.
  • Couple GRWM: Two people, one mirror and plenty of banter. Anniversary prep, wedding-guest looks, trips or a lazy Sunday brunch.
  • Work GRWM: First-day fits, corporate-core outfit checks and hostel-to-office transitions, with honest talk about burnout, imposter syndrome and the meeting they’re dreading.
  • Festive GRWM: Saree draping, festival prep, regional jewellery and family-heirloom stories that make tradition feel personal and current.
  • Queer and gender-fluid GRWM: Makeup, binders, nails and clothing to explore self-expression, and getting ready without conforming to conventional gender expectations.
  • Mental-health GRWM: Getting ready on a hard day, talking through anxiety or therapy takeaways, and showing up anyway.
  • Occasion GRWM: First dates, college fests, job interviews, birthdays, solo trips and moving to a new city.

Bengaluru creators bring in their own flavourIn Bengaluru, GRWM isn’t about getting dressed. It’s about getting things off your chest, ideally before the eyeliner dries.Rida Tharana: Eyeliner on, opinions out. She mixes fit checks with straight talk on colourism and gender expectations.Spandana Shree: Birthday plans cancelled? Blush stays on. Her reel is changing into a cute minidress with a longer vlog on YouTube about having to change her original birthday plans and finding a way to make the day special anyway.Kaviya Ravichandran: From desk-ready looks to gym fits, she adds a dash of spunk and shows off different sides of her everyday life. The Get-Ready-to-Tell-All Generation Why does Gen Z love GRWM? Unlike a perfectly edited vlog, GRWM feels like a FaceTime call with a friend. Creators don’t necessarily need a grand storyline; even an ordinary morning can become relatable content. It also allows young people to experiment with identity, document transitions and build communities around shared experiences. So, what are you waiting for? Ready, set, rant!
