Bengaluru: A 53-year-old man who applied online for a private bank credit card was duped of Rs 81,769 after receiving a call from a person claiming to be a bank representative on Sept 12.According to the complaint filed by Mohammed Ashraf Ali, a resident of K Narayanapura in east Bengaluru, he applied for a credit card earlier this month.On Sept 12, he received a call from an unknown number. The caller, introducing himself as a bank staffer, told him his credit card application had been approved and that he needed to complete a video verification process. The caller asked Ali to display his Aadhaar card, PAN card, and an existing credit card during verification.Though he initially trusted the call, Ali later sensed something suspicious and disconnected the call. However, when he later checked his messages, he was shocked to find three transactions made from his account — for Rs 8,779, Rs 32,985 and Rs 40,005, totalling Rs 81,769.Ali said the caller contacted him from the mobile number +91 7870405631. Banaswadi police have registered a case under IT Act and are investigating. A senior officer said, “We’re verifying how the fraudsters got information about the complainant applying for a credit card. Someone from the bank may have leaked data.”
