Ahmedabad: A 23-year-old man was booked for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, crashing into police barricades during a vehicle-checking drive at the Sabarmati Riverfront and later damaging a civic wall in the early hours of Saturday.According to a complaint lodged by Sabarmati Riverfront (West) police, the cops were conducting vehicle checks near Hariharanand Circle around 12.30am when they noticed a black Mahindra Thar being driven in a zigzag manner.Head constable Harshad Parshottam and constables Rajesh Ramnarayan and Jagdish Chatur signalled the driver to stop. However, the driver allegedly ignored the instructions and continued driving, posing a risk to police personnel and other road users.The vehicle was eventually intercepted near the multilevel parking area. Police identified the driver as Mohit Singh Tomar, a resident of Khokhra. During questioning, officers allegedly found him intoxicated. The complaint states that he smelled strongly of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and was unable to maintain his balance.Police said Tomar did not possess a permit to consume or possess alcohol. His vehicle, valued at about Rs 6 lakh, was seized.During the investigation, police reviewed CCTV footage and found that the SUV had allegedly struck barricades that had been placed for the checking drive. The driver then reportedly attempted a U-turn and crashed into a wall belonging to the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation, causing damage estimated at Rs 3,000.Police registered a separate case under the Motor Vehicles Act and the Gujarat Prohibition Act for allegedly driving under the influence. A second complaint was filed for dangerous driving and damage to public property.
