Deaf, mute inmate of govt shelter beaten to death in Ajmer

Ajmer: A 40-year-old deaf and mute man living in a govt shelter run by Rajasthan’s social justice and empowerment department was allegedly beaten to death with an iron rod by another inmate Tuesday.Police said the incident took place between 1 and 2 am at the city’s University Road shelter when no security personnel were on duty other than one gate keeper.The deceased, Mukhar, was deaf and mute and had been living at the centre due to mental illness. He was allegedly attacked by another resident, Aamid.According to police, Aamid struck Mukhar several times on his head and body with an iron rod, resulting in his death, on the spot.Civil Lines police reached the shelter after being alerted and detained Aamid. The deceased’s body was taken to the mortuary of Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital for postmortem.Police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack as both accused and deceased were residents of the shelter and were reportedly mentally unwell. Police said they are also questioning shelter staff, security personnel and other residents as part of the investigation.
