Tinsukia: The district transport department on Tuesday seized five overloaded trucks and impounded another vehicle for operating without required documents.The enforcement drive targeted violations of motor vehicle regulations and aimed to improve road safety. Officials said the five trucks were detained after being found carrying loads beyond their permissible limits.In a separate case, a vehicle operating without necessary documents was impounded and kept at District Transport Office for further legal action.Tinsukia district transport officer (DTO) Kanai Mahanta said enforcement would continue.“The enforcement drive against traffic violations will continue in the coming days. Vehicles found violating the prescribed rules, including those carrying loads beyond the permissible limits or operating without valid documents, will face action as per the law,” Mahanta said.Overloading can affect vehicle stability and braking performance, besides contributing to road and infrastructure damage. Under Section 194(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended in 2019, carrying excess load attracts a minimum fine of Rs 20,000 and an additional Rs 2,000 for every tonne of excess load. Authorities can also require the excess load to be off-loaded before allowing the vehicle to proceed.Assam transport department’s records list overloading among violations attracting enforcement action and compounding fines, with thousands of cases detected across the state.The DTO urged vehicle owners and operators to carry only permissible loads and keep mandatory documents, including registration, fitness, insurance, permit and pollution-related certificates, updated before putting vehicles on the road.
