New Delhi: A couple was found dead with gunshot wounds inside a rented house in north Delhi’s Burari area Thursday. Police suspect the man shot the woman before taking his own life after their relationship ended. Both were 26.The deceased, Shivangini, was a native of Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh and was employed with NIC; and Nikhil, hailed from Pinana village in Haryana’s Sonipat district.Police sources said that shortly before the incident, Nikhil sent a series of WhatsApp messages to his family, claiming that Shivangini’s family was not willing to let them get married, and that this would be his last message. He also allegedly shared his live location, his mobile phone password and the address of Shivangini’s residence with his family.Police said Shivangini lived in a rented accommodation in Kamalpur, along with her younger sister Nishangini (21), and Nikhil had come to visit her Thursday morning.Around 4pm after Nishangini, a school teacher, returned home from work, she found the room locked from inside. After repeated failed attempts to get a response, she sought help from the building owner and other residents to open the door. Upon entering, they found Shivangini and Nikhil lying in a pool of blood, and immediately informed the police.Shivangini and Nikhil had been in a relationship for about six months. Shivangini had reportedly called Nikhil earlier that day to end the relationship, allegedly because he was unemployed. Police suspect that after Shivangini’s sister left for work, Nikhil arrived at the house with a pistol, shot Shivangini, and then turned the weapon on himself.Police seized the pistol, two empty cartridge cases, mobile phones and other exhibits. Reports of the forensic analysis and post-mortem are awaited to establish the sequence of events and ascertain the motive behind the crime.
