Tarakeswar: A viral video showing a brutal assault on councillor and former chairman of Tarakeswar municipality Swapan Samanta last Monday, in which his clothes were torn off, has prompted the Hooghly Police to initiate a probe.While Samanta was speaking with someone in the Saradapally area at 12:20 pm, a group of eight to 10 youths suddenly surrounded him and began shouting ‘Chor’ (thief). Two youths forcibly removed his shoes and belt, placing them around his neck, before parading him around the locality. Some BJP workers have demanded the immediate arrest of certain councillors who are allegedly involved in scams.Ganesh Chakraborty, vice-president of the BJP, told TOI: “We do not support the assault. What if a person commits suicide after such an incident? It is not the behaviour of a gentleman. We have asked the police authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.” Following the incident, the BJP workers involved in the assault fled the locality.
