Panchkula: A 19-year-old student was killed and his friend seriously injured in a road accident on the Chandigarh-Shimla highway near the Chandimandir toll plaza on Wednesday afternoon.The deceased was identified as Monu, a resident of Tipra village in Kalka whose family originally hails from Bihar. Monu was a Class XII student. His friend, Neeraj Kumar (19), a resident of Kalka and also a Class XII student, suffered multiple injuries and is undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital, Sector 6. Doctors said he sustained fractures in both arms along with head and other bodily injuries.According to Neeraj, he was at his shop in Kalka when Monu asked him to accompany him to Panchkula on his motorcycle. The two were travelling towards Panchkula and had reached near Old Panchkula Chowk when a speeding car allegedly hit their motorcycle while overtaking.The impact caused the motorcycle to lose balance and crash into the divider, throwing both riders onto the road. Police said moments later, a vehicle coming from behind allegedly ran over Monu, with a tyre passing over him. He died on the spot.The body has been kept in the mortuary, and the postmortem examination will be conducted on Thursday.Police have launched an investigation and are trying to identify the vehicle that allegedly ran over Monu after the motorcycle crashed. CCTV footage from the area is also being examined.
