Varanasi: An eight-year-old Class II student fell out of the window and was killed, while several others sustained minor injuries after a school bus carrying 45 children overturned when it rammed into an electric pole in the Devgaon area of Azamgarh on Thursday morning. Police have launched an investigation, while the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been asked to examine the vehicle’s fitness and condition.Azamgarh SP Anil Kumar identified the deceased as Yunus Belal Khan (8), a resident of Banaraspur village. During the preliminary investigation, police found that Yunus, who was seated in the front row, was thrown out through the shattered windshield when the bus hit the pole. The bus then overturned. He was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.Police and locals rescued all the children from the overturned bus. Several students sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital in Lalganj, where they were administered first aid.Officials said the body has been sent for postmortem examination.According to police, the bus belonging to Jamia Faizeaam School had picked up students from their homes and was passing through the Bashashi tri-junction on the Varanasi-Azamgarh National Highway when the driver allegedly lost control of the steering wheel. The vehicle rammed into an electric pole before overturning.Hearing the children’s cries for help, locals rushed to the spot and alerted the police. With their assistance, police rescued the trapped students and shifted the injured to hospital.CO (Lalganj) Bhupesh Pandey said they are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. The RTO will submit a report on the fitness and condition of the school bus.
