Gurgaon: The fifth unit at Chandu Budhera Water Treatment Plant (WTP) will begin its trial run next week, after which, the unit will be commissioned for regular operations, an official said.The new unit will increase the plant’s total capacity from 400 MLD to 500 MLD and is expected to improve water supply, particularly in sectors 81 to 115.The Rs 52.5-crore project started in March 2024 and was scheduled to be completed by April this year. However, its commissioning was delayed due to the pending electricity connection. Officials said the connection has now been provided and the remaining pre-commissioning tests are underway.“The VCB has been installed, and the electricity connection is now in place. We are testing all machinery and equipment and rectifying any faults before commencing trial operations. This process is expected to take a couple of days. The trial run will begin next week, following which the unit will be commissioned for regular operations,” the senior GMDA official said.At present, GMDA supplies around 670 MLD of treated drinking water across Gurgaon. Of this, 400 MLD is supplied from the existing four units at the Chandu Budhera WTP, while the remaining quantity comes from the Basai WTP.“With the commissioning of the fourth unit last year, we were in a comfortable position to ensure an adequate water supply during the summer. The fifth unit has been planned to meet the city’s growing water demand and further augment the supply. It will primarily cater to sectors 81 to 115, where population growth and residential development have increased significantly. We also plan to extend canal water supply to the Gwal Pahari area,” the official said.GMDA is also planning another capacity expansion at the plant. Officials said the tender for the sixth unit of 100 MLD at Chandu Budhera is currently under technical evaluation.Meanwhile, the Haryana govt last week approved Rs 149 crore for a third water treatment plant at Basai. The 100 MLD plant is expected to be completed by early 2029 and will further augment the city’s drinking water supply.According to the Gurgaon Master Development Plan 2031, the city’s population is projected to reach 42.5 lakh, requiring about 1,675 MLD of water every day. Of this, around 1,244 MLD is planned to be met through fresh canal water, while the remaining demand is proposed to be met through treated wastewater for non-potable uses such as horticulture, industrial use and construction.
