Chandigarh: The UT Chief secretary Tuesday directed the sports department to fast-track all projects planned for 2026–27 and ensure their timely completion.Key projects include installation of CCTV cameras across all sports complexes, laying of astro-turf at the hockey stadium in Sector 18 and the six-a-side hockey ground in Sector 42, upgradation of the synthetic athletic track in Sector 7, and development of infrastructure at the Lake Sports Complex.Emphasising optimal use of sports infrastructure, the chief secretary asked the department to actively pursue hosting national and international events. Officials said Chandigarh is bidding to host the Asian Relay Championship 2027 and the 21st Asian Roller Skating Championship 2027. The second Chandigarh International Marathon is also proposed for Nov 2026.The department has been directed to prepare a comprehensive sports calendar featuring regular events, including national and international competitions.Officials said scholarships worth about Rs 22.12 crore and cash awards of ₹9.45 crore were disbursed to sportspersons in 2023–24 and 2024–25.
