Gujarat: 4,986 candidates yet to confirm RTE admission, deadline extended to May 15

Ahmedabad: The deadline for confirming admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act has been extended to May 15 after thousands of students were found to not have secured the allotted seats. The move aims to ensure that no eligible student is deprived of admission due to delays in confirmation.According to official data, a total of 77,925 students were allotted seats in the first round of RTE admissions. However, only 72,939 students have confirmed their admissions so far, leaving 4,986 seats unconfirmed. Authorities have now given these students another opportunity to complete the process within the extended deadline.Under the RTE Act, 25 per cent of seats in private schools are reserved for students from economically weaker sections. For the current academic year, 83,687 seats were available for Class 1 admissions across the state. A total of 2,42,500 applications were received, of which 54,588 were rejected, and 2,043 applicants were disqualified due to incomplete documents or ineligibility. This left 1,85,869 valid applications for consideration. The first round of seat allotment was conducted on May 4 by the Directorate of Primary Education. Despite the large number of applications, 5,753 of the available seats remained vacant due to a lack of preference from applicants.Initially, the deadline to confirm admissions was May 12. However, with several students yet to complete the process, authorities decided to extend the deadline by three days. After May 15, the second round of admissions will begin to fill the remaining vacant seats.
