Chennai police commissioner warns bar owners against bribing cops

Chennai: “Do not give bribes to police personnel,” city commissioner of police A Amalraj told FL-2 and FL-3 bar owners in the city, warning that both the giver and the receiver of bribes would face legal action under anti-corruption laws.At an exclusive meeting with the bar owners on Tuesday, Amalraj said bar owners should not attempt to influence police personnel through illegal gratification. He cautioned that if any bar owner or representative was found offering or paying bribes to police officials, criminal action would be initiated against them. He also reiterated that police personnel found accepting bribes would also face similar action. At least 230 FL-2 and FL-3 category of licensed bars currently operate in the city. The meeting came amid increased scrutiny of bar operations, including allegations of overcharging for food and snacks, illegal sale of liquor inside and outside licensed premises, and operating beyond permitted hours.Police sources said that ahead of the commissioner’s direct interaction with the bar owners, all police personnel present at the meeting were asked to leave the conference hall, allowing participants to raise issues and receive instructions without the presence of subordinate officers.
