Ghaziabad: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has widened the entry and exit lanes near ABES College, adding one lane each to ease congestion where NH-9 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) converge.Nearly 20 km of DME and NH9 passes through the city and witnesses traffic influxes of 60,000 to 4 lakh vehicles. Jams and long tailbacks are a regular feature. The stretch, which has opened in phases since 2018, has seen a manifold increase in vehicular movement. Over the years, NHAI has been introducing new cuts and exits along with the broadening of lanes to beat the snarls.“Ispat Nagar in the city is an industrial cluster that sees movement of heavy vehicles and daily commuters through arterial roads in and out of NH9, leading to traffic congestion at the point where the arterial road joins NH9 and the expressway,” an NHAI official said. “The extra lanes will do away with this problem. It will allow unhindered vehicular movement on both sides of the expressway and in turn will benefit commuters of Sanya Vihar, Crossings Republik and Dundahera on one side and Vijay Nagar on the other.”
NH9
In March this year, NHAI added an extra lane on the Delhi-to-Dasna side of the expressway near IPEM Group of Institutions to decongest the Vijay Nagar to Dasna stretch. In Jan, it created a U-turn on NH9 near Dasna for the same.
DME
The NHAI is also constructing a six-lane road which will start near the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and NH-9 junction at Lal Kuan and will bypass the congested four-lane stretch that connects Ghaziabad with Noida and eventually Aligarh via Sikandrabad, Bulandshahr and Khurja. The elevated road will also open up a faster route to the Noida airport for the city’s residents through Eastern Peripheral Expressway.
