Brain-dead man’s kidneys, liver donated

Kolkata: The liver and kidneys of a 73-year-old deceased donor will be transplanted into three patients in three hospitals in the city through Friday night to early Saturday.This sixth deceased organ donation of the year comes within a week of the previous one.Kasba resident Tapan Sarkar suffered intracranial haemorrhage at home, leading to hospitalisation. He was declared brain dead at Ruby General Hospital on Thursday night. “All efforts were made to save the patient but when doctors saw no hope for revival of the brain stem cell a medical board declared him brain dead following mandatory tests. The family was counselled for the donation,” said Subhasish Datta, chief general manager (operations) at Ruby.ROTTO (East) allocated the kidneys to patients at CMRI and RN Tagore hospitals, while the liver was allocated to Apollo. The deceased’s cornea will be banked.
