Boy’s bid to rescue sister ends in tragedy, both mowed down by train

Varanasi: A 17-year-old boy’s desperate bid to save his elder sister from an incoming train ended in tragedy after both lost their lives in Rajpur village under the Mirzamurad police station area on Wednesday evening. The 19-year-old woman died on the spot after being hit by the train while crossing the railway track with cattle, while her brother succumbed to his injuries during treatment early Thursday. The incident took another turn when the family allegedly hid the woman’s mutilated body in a sack for several hours to avoid a postmortem, prompting police to intervene.ACP (Rajatalab) Veer Singh said that prima facie the incident appeared to be an accident. However, after learning that the family had concealed the woman’s body, Mirzamurad police investigated all aspects before sending both bodies for postmortem examination.According to police, Annu Pal was returning home after grazing cattle around 6 pm. While crossing the railway track near her house, she allegedly failed to notice a speeding train. On seeing the train, her younger brother, Tinku, rushed to save her. While Annu died on the spot, Tinku sustained grievous injuries. Family members rushed him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment early on Thursday.Meanwhile, instead of informing the police, the family members allegedly packed Annu’s mutilated body in a sack and kept it inside their house. When police reached the village, the family initially refused to hand over the body. After hours of persuasion, they finally allowed the police to take possession of it and complete the legal formalities.
