Better co-op between govt & security forces needed to detect illegal immigration: LADC CEM

Aizawl: Lai Autonomous district council chief executive member C Lalsawmzuala on Friday said sustained cooperation among the administration, village councils, churches and NGOs was essential in dealing with illegal immigration and business by undocumented foreigners.While cross-border trade with neighbouring countries had economic benefits, business activities by undocumented immigrants needed proper regulation to protect local interests, he added.Lalsawmzuala also urged the Assam Rifles to remain vigilant along the international border, saying peace and security in Lawngtlai remained a priority.In a meeting, chaired by deputy commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga, at the DC’s Conference Hall in Lawngtlai, district authorities said strengthening of coordination among govt agencies, security forces, village councils, churches and civil society groups was essential to monitor illegal immigration.Officials reviewed the district’s SOP for managing illegal immigrants and overseeing their commercial activities, amid concerns over cross-border movement.The deputy commissioner said biometric enrolment of refugees, being carried out under the Union home ministry’s directions, was nearing completion. He asked village councils and hotel owners to maintain proper records of refugees and illegal immigrants and avoid providing accommodation to undocumented persons.Representatives of the district administration, LADC, police, Assam Rifles, Central Young Lai Association, Young Lai Association branches, village councils and NGOs attended the meeting.
