Dhubri: A Bangladeshi national convicted of illegally entering India has been ordered to leave Assam under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950.South Salmara-Mankachar district magistrate issued the order on Aug 14, directing Mohammad Masood alias “Mister” (24) to leave within 24 hours.Masood, a resident of Ratanpur village in Bangladesh’s Kurigram district, was apprehended by BSF personnel near Jordanga border outpost on Jan 13 and handed over to Mankachar police.Police registered a case under Section 324(3) of the BNS, Section 21 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, and Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.He was convicted on July 21 and sentenced to concurrent terms of one month under the BNS, seven months under the Immigration and Foreigners Act and three months under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. His detention was set off, and the sentence ended on Aug 12.Masood was then shifted from Dhubri District Jail to the Matia Holding Centre in Goalpara for deportation.SSP R Seetal Kumar told TOI, “After the expulsion order from the court, the process got underway to deport the foreigner to Bangladesh according to law and procedures.”
