Baruipur arson: 32 in cop net so far

Baruipur: The number of people picked up for arson, vandalism and violence reached 32 on Thursday. About 12 were detained between Wednesday night and Thursday while 20 others had been picked up by the police earlier.The detainees are mostly from Surjapur Haat, a residential area off Kulpi Road, as well as Surjapur and Alipore villages in Baruipur. Several houses in these neighbourhoods were found locked as residents fled in fear of being detained on charges of vandalism, arson and lynching of Indrajit Tanti, an auto driver.Dibakar Sardar, a fish-seller, was held from his Kusumpur house in Surjapur Hat, a stone’s throw from a temporary police camp that had been vandalised. His brother Bhaskar said, “Dibakar was not part of the mob but he was picked up. He was minding his own business at the time of the rampage and lynching.”Two days ago, CM Suvendu Adhikari had announced that at least 200 people had been identified for being part of the attack on cops, vandalism and burning of police vehicles.
