Gurgaon: Municipal Corporation of Manesar (MCM) will get its first construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing plant, with a leading automobile manufacturer set to build the facility for Rs 8 crore. The plant, which will be built on about 4 acres, is expected to be completed within four months. It will have a processing capacity of 300 tonnes of C&D waste per day.MCM commissioner Pradeep Singh has reviewed the project’s progress with the representatives of Honda Motors. He directed officials and the company to expedite construction.Gurgaon currently has only one processing facility in Basai, which comes under MCG. Singh said the project is important for the civic body and instructed that the facility should be completed within the stipulated timeline so that operations can begin in Jan next year. He also directed that construction meet the required quality and technical standards.The plant will be operated and maintained by MCM. “Processed material recovered from C&D waste will be used in civic development works, including road and building construction and interlocking projects,” he said. Officials said the use of recycled material could also help reduce the cost of projects.The joint commissioner, Puneet Kumar, said around 50 tonnes of C&D waste is generated daily in Manesar. At present, debris from construction and demolition is sometimes dumped on vacant plots, roadsides and other public places, creating sanitation and environmental problems.“We have not yet disclosed the location but work has already begun on the site. This is to prevent any protests. The site, however, is at a considerable distance from the habitation,” said an MCM official, adding it will be covered on all sides. The new facility will enable the waste to be collected and processed scientifically, the official added.Honda representatives have assured the commissioner that the project would be completed within the prescribed time frame.
