Dhubri: Assam inspector general of police (IGP) Devojyoti Mukherjee’s President’s Medal has brought pride to the town where he spent his student years.Mukherjee completed his matriculation at Dhubri Sishu Pathsala Higher Secondary School and graduated from Bholanath College in the 1980s, family sources said.His close friend Binoy Medhi, who works at Jorhat Agriculture University, said Mukherjee attended several institutions because of his father’s transferable central govt job. He began his education at St Edmund’s School in Shillong and later graduated from Bholanath College, now an autonomous institution.“Debu, as we fondly used to call him, was brilliant in studies and fluent in English. Debu won all the prizes in debate, extempore and other competitions during college,” Medhi added.A senior state police officer said Mukherjee, IGP (Border), Assam, received the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service in recognition of his hard work and commitment to the state and nation.He also received the Assam CM’s Special Service Medal in a Crisis Situation for exceptional bravery and handling critical situations with precision. Both honours were announced on India’s 80th Independence Day in 2026.In 2020, Mukherjee received the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
