Guwahati: Around 228 km of the 276 km border, which Assam shares with Bangladesh, has been fenced and over 38 km remained unfenced, govt informed the state Assembly on Wednesday.Implementation of the Assam Accord, border protection & development departments minister Atul Bora, replying to queries by AGP MLA Prakash Ch Das, said, “Three districts — Sribhumi (over 98 km), Cachar (over 27 km) and Dhubri (over 141 km) — of Assam share border with Bangladesh. Out of which, fencing work has been completed in over 93 km in Sribhumi, over 27 km in Cachar and 107 km in Dhubri-South Salmara area.”Bora said the NDA govt is focused on stopping illegal immigration from Bangladesh. “The govt is serious about stopping illegal entries from Bangladesh through borders. CCTV cameras have been installed at many vulnerable places along the Indo-Bangladesh border where fencing is not feasible due to riverine areas. Meanwhile, there are 14 checkposts for continuous monitoring by the BSF. Real-time monitoring is being maintained,” he said. On the pushback of illegal Bangladeshi nationals, Bora said no extradition treaty has been signed so far.During the third day of the Assam assembly budget session, Bora also said implementation of Clause 6 of the Accord is one of the top priorities of the govt. He said 40 recommendations of Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma High Level Committee report that promises safeguard of the rights of indigenous people are in the implementation stage.
