Hyderabad: The 17-year-old boy who allegedly ran over a nurse in Asif Nagar on Sunday morning was on his way to a farmhouse in Moinabad for a joyride with two friends—one a minor and the other an adult—when the accident occurred.Police said the trio had initially planned to travel by bus but later decided to hire a car at the insistence of one of them.“The three were on a trial run of the car when the accident took place,” said A Ramanjaneyulu, sub-inspector of Asif Nagar police station.According to police, after hitting the nurse, the boys sped away, returned the vehicle to the person from whom they had borrowed it, and proceeded with their plan to visit the farmhouse, unaware that 42-year-old nurse Faheem Unissa had succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital. They later travelled to Moinabad by bus.Initially, police registered a case under Section 106 of the BNS for causing death by negligence. On Monday, however, the case was altered to Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of BNS, and the minor driver was booked under the provision.Police said the other three individuals involved, including the man who lent the vehicle, would be charged with abetment. The two minors will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board after their arrest.“The boys had informed their parents that they would be travelling by bus. However, when they decided to hire a car instead, they did not inform them. The three discreetly approached an acquaintance who had access to a car available for rent,” police said.Investigators found that the boys had driven the six-seater SUV barely 300 metres from the pickup point when the 17-year-old allegedly struck the nurse, who was on her way to work. The investigation further revealed that after the accident, the boys returned the vehicle to the acquaintance, claiming it was not suitable for their trip. When questioned about the damage to the SUV, they allegedly said it had been involved in a minor collision with another vehicle.“They then asked the acquaintance to drop them at Mehdipatnam, from where they boarded a bus to Moinabad and spent the day at a farmhouse,” Ramanjaneyulu said.Following the nurse’s death, police traced the acquaintance, who informed investigators that he was not the owner of the vehicle and had himself rented it from another person.“The actual owner is Basheer, who leases self-drive cars for about Rs 1,000 a day. He had rented the SUV to one individual, who in turn lent it to the acquaintance approached by the boys,” said K Srinivas, assistant commissioner of police, Asif Nagar division.Based on this information, police contacted the parents and reached out to the boys, who were still in Moinabad. They were subsequently brought to the police station for questioning.
