Chennai: Puzhal police arrested two men for breaking open a temple hundi and stealing cash from a temple on Puzhal-Ambattur Road. Police said Shanthi, who performs puja at the Bhavani Muthumariamman Temple in MAC Nagar, Puzhal, closed the temple after completing the puja on Thursday. When the temple was reopened on Friday morning, coins were strewn across the premises.A subsequent inspection revealed that the lock of the temple hundi had been broken and the hundi offerings were missing. Shanthi lodged a complaint with the Puzhal police and she claimed that at least ₹5,000 in cash could have been stolen from the hundi.Police examined CCTV footage from the neighbourhood, which led them to identify the burglars as Prashanth, 24, of Vyasarpadi, and Kishore, 22, of Kodungaiyur.Prashanth was involved in four drug cases and nine other criminal cases, including a robbery case, police said. Kishore was involved in one case.The police arrested both men and seized the auto-rickshaw used in the crime. They were produced before a magistrate’s court and remanded in judicial custody.
